6 Napster
Lancé en 1998 aux Etats-Unis, Napster est le site précurseur de la musique en ligne. Il est le premier à permettre le téléchargement gratuit (et illégal) de musique au format MP3 par le biais du P2P (peer-to-peer), qui permet l’échange de fichiers entre internautes. Il connaît un succès fulgurant, avec une utilisation par 70 millions d’internautes au faîte de sa popularité. Ce succès provoque l’inquiétude des majors de l’industrie du disque, dont la vente de CD baisse face à cette concurrence inopinée. En 2001, Napster est fermé par décision de justice. En octobre 2003, il renaît de ses cendres sous la forme d’un site légal et payant géré par l’éditeur de logiciels Roxio. Son grand concurrent est iTunes, la plateforme de musique lancée par Apple en avril 2003. En février 2004, Napster franchit la barre des 5 millions de morceaux de musique vendus. On peut soit acheter les morceaux à l’unité (0,99 dollar US), soit prendre un abonnement mensuel (9,95 dollars US) et télécharger à volonté. En mai 2004, Napster étend son activité au Canada. En décembre 2004, Napster nouvelle formule comptabilise 270.000 clients. Suivent un Napster UK, un Napster Allemagne et un Napster Japon. -
7 musique en ligne 1996-2002
Suite à l’apparition en 1996 du format MP3, un standard de compression audio qui connaît un grand succès, les fichiers MP3 concurrencent vite les CD, pour des raisons pratiques: téléchargement immédiat, stockage facile, coût peu élevé, achat de titres à l’unité, etc. Par ailleurs, la taille des disques durs augmentant régulièrement, les mélomanes peuvent désormais constituer une véritable discothèque de MP3 sur leur ordinateur. Ils peuvent également stocker des fichiers musicaux sur leur PDA (personal digital assistant), dont tous les modèles intègrent un lecteur de fichiers MP3 dès 2000. La musique en ligne est d’abord caractérisée par des téléchargements gratuits (et le plus souvent illégaux) sur différents réseaux d’échange de fichiers, appelés réseaux P2P (peer-to-peer), dont le précurseur Napster (ancienne formule), suivi de Kazaa et de bien d’autres. L’échange de millions de fichiers musicaux suscite l’inquiétude des majors du disque (Sony, Universal, Warner Music, BMG, EMI, etc.). Napster est fermé en 2001 par décision de justice. Toutefois Kazaa, apparu en 2002, devient l’un des logiciels le plus téléchargés au monde. -
8 Kazaa
Créé en 2002 par Niklas Zennström et Janus Friis, Kazaa est un service d’échange (à la fois un logiciel et une plateforme) de fichiers musicaux en mode P2P (peer-to-peer). Kazaa fait suite au précurseur Napster (ancienne formule), lancé en 1998 et fermé en 2001 par décision de justice suite à des démêlés avec les majors du disque. Tout comme le Napster de l’époque, Kazaa rencontre un énorme succès. Début 2005, le logiciel Kazaa revendique 380 millions de téléchargements. Parallèlement, le débat fait rage autour de ces plateformes de téléchargement gratuit et souvent illégal. En septembre 2003, les deux fondateurs de Kazaa créent Skype, un service de téléphonie gratuite sur l’internet, qui utilise lui aussi le système P2P. Tout comme Kazaa, le succès est au rendez-vous. -
